The desperation for employment among the youth in Punjab was on full display when more than 1,200 aspirants, including two LLBs, one MBA, one M.Phil and several dozen post-graduates, turned up for interviews for a eight posts of peon in the district courts here on Wednesday.
On Thursday, about 900 applicants appeared in interviews for four posts of piada (one who delivers summons) at the courts.
The required qualification for the posts is “middle school” or Class 8 pass. The age criteria: 18-35.
The unemployment rate in Punjab is 9.1 per cent, compared to the national average of 6.8 per cent.
“I have no other option but to apply for a job that requires just a Class 8 pass candidate because of poverty,” said a young female candidate, a double MA in Punjabi and Economics on the verge of tears.
There were youth holding degrees of M.Sc, MA, B.Ed, B.Com and PGDCA diplomas from recognised universities. And many of them had high scores too! The qualifying age was 18 to 35.
District and Sessions Judge Kuldeep Singh and Additional Sessions Judge S.K. Sachdeva conducted the interviews. The results will be declared later.
