Even as Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) MLA Akabaruddin Owaisi languishes in Adilabad jail for his hate speech, his older brother and party president Asaduddin Owaisi was remanded in judicial custody by a Medak district court in connection with a 2005 case involving assault on government officials.
The senior Owaisi, who is Lok Sabha MP from Hyderabad, surrendered before a court in Sangareddy on Monday morning after it became known that police would execute a pending non-bailable warrant in his name.
His lawyers moved a petition seeking cancellation of the warrant but the judge dismissed it and sent him to judicial remand till February 2. Police moved him to the Kandi district jail. His lawyers then filed a bail petition but hearing was adjourned to Tuesday.
Asaduddin is the prime accused in the March 16, 2005 case and charged with obstructing/assaulting government officials from carrying out the demolition of a place of worship to extend a road at Muttangi. Akbaruddin is a co-accused in the case.
