The agitators were protesting death of an employee of the department who was crushed by a rashly driven UPSRTC bus. Irate mob damaged the bus before the cops rushed to the scene.
They were demanding an ex gratis for the kin of the deceased. The erring driver Mohammad Habib and the conductor of the bus Sudesh Singh were arrested later.
Traffic on Civil Hospital Road, Park Road, Raj Bhawan Road, Bandaria Bagh crossings and the Hazratganj crossing was thrown out of gear by the time the ACM-I and CO Hazratganj reached the place and pacified the agitators. It took hours to clear the heavy jam.
The incident took place around 12.40 pm when a bus (UP 32 A-8218) hit Awas Vikas Parishad employee Baijnath Singh (55) near Golf Club. Baijnath succumbed to head injuries on the spot. On hearing about the mishap, dozens of department employees gathered at the site and smashed the windowpanes of the bus.
The mob later staged a blockade on the road causing traffic snarl on the roads connected to Hazratganj.
Policemen faced a tough time managing the traffic movement.
Meanwhile, a Maruti car crushed a minor girl to death near Munsariankhera village in Maal on Tuesday.
