The Shiv Sena mouthpiece on Saturday took potshots at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the auction of his monogrammed suit, which was bought by a Gujarat-based businessman for Rs 4.31 crore.
An editorial in the party mouthpiece Saamana said Modi should wear such suits and auction them every day, so that money coming from rich people can be used for the benefit of the poor.
“It is said the whole country was curious about the auction and there were news reports that several builders, industrialists and diamond merchants were competing to buy the suit. Modi wears new clothes every day and if some of those are auctioned, the black money [in the hands of some people] could be recovered and even the [BJP’s] assurance to recover black money could be fulfilled,” reads the tongue-in-cheek remark.
“There was criticism by the opponents that the Prime Minister from Gandhi’s country was wearing such an expensive suit. Modi did not bother to respond to them and auctioned the suit. Money coming from the auction would be utilised for cleaning the Ganga and education of girls,” it goes on to say.
The editorial adds, “Instead of criticising, Congress can auction the clothes and footwear of Rahul Gandhi and see what they fetch. Lalu Prasad and Mulayam Singh Yadav should auction their belongings, Arvind Kejriwal can collect funds by auctioning his muffler. The suit fetched so much because of the person who wore it.”
