Parsawal bund, constructed on the river at the Barabanki-Gonda border, developed a 500-metre-long crack this morning after which water seeped into around 150 villages in nearby areas, sub-divisional magistrate Gorelal said.

Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) jawans and boats have been pressed into service to rescue residents of the affected villages and to relocate them to safer places, he said.

Senior administration and police officers have reached the spot, the SDM said, adding that additional PAC has been demanded from the district headquarters.

Parsawal bund is in Elgin Bridge area where the Ghaghara is currently flowing nearly one metre above the danger mark, he said.
