Personnel of Nagaland Armed Police (NAP) battalion stormed the office of the deputy commissioner at Zunheboto and damaged office furniture, windows and vehicles escalating the pre-poll tension in the town, official sources said on Tuesday.
About 100 personnel of the battalion, stationed at Naltoga on the outskirts of zunheboto town, barged into the DC's office on Tuesday night on suspicion that their postal ballots for assembly polls on Wednesday were being tampered with.
The ballot papers were to be distributed to them by the battalion commandant.
Paramilitary forces were deployed to bring the situation under control, the sources said, adding the incident escalated tension at Zunheboto, which witnessed majority of the pre-poll clashes and incidents of intimidation of voters.
Opposition Nagaland People's Front and BJP have alleged that the district administration in connivance with the ruling Congress had retained the postal ballots meant for the police personnel and demanded suspension of the commandant and SP of Zunheboto immediately by the Election Commission.
No body was present at the Deputy Commissioner's office when the nap personnel barged into it.
Communication lines between the office of the Deputy Commissioner, who is also the election officer in the district, and the chief electoral officer here was disrupted during the incident, the sources said.
Nagaland Government on Tuesday asked Home Secretary AS Bhatia to rush to Zunheboto and file a detailed report on the incident.
He was asked to send reports as required to the chief electoral officer, who was yet to receive the details of the damage following disruption in communication lines.
Bhatia would also supervise arrangements for Wednesday's assembly polls in the district, the sources added.
