Simultaneous polls will be held for two municipal councils of Kohima and Dimapur and 16 town councils for the first time in the state after enactment of the Municipal Act 2002, replacing the vintage Town Committee Act.

Official sources in Kohima said that State Election Commissioner TM Mannen on Tuesday inquired about poll preparations and security arrangements from the respective deputy commissioners through recently commissioned video conferencing facility in the state.

The State Election Commission directed respective district administrations to adopt appropriate steps as per the ground situation to ensure a free and fair poll on Wednesday, the sources said.

Following poll-related stray incidents and subsequent tension prevailing in certain wards of Dimapur municipal area, the district administration imposed Section 144 CrPC from Tuesday evening till Wednesday evening and restricted movements of vehicles in the town for smooth conduct of polls.
