NATO warplanes killed 12 rebels in Afghanistan after a group of rebels was spotted moving into position on the roof of a compound.

NATO warplanes killed 12 insurgents in southern Afghanistan after a group of rebels was spotted moving into position on the roof of a compound, the alliance's force here said on Tuesday.

The latest strike, in the southern province of Kandahar on Monday, takes to nearly 140 the number of rebels the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) says it has killed in a series of major clashes since the weekend.

ISAF troops identified a number of insurgents who "attempted to occupy firing positions on the roof of a compound", a statement said.

"The insurgents were engaged by close air support, which killed 12 of them," it added.

ISAF announced late on Monday its soldiers had killed 55 rebels in an intense battle in the neighbouring province of Zabul.

On Sunday, the 37-nation force said Afghan and ISAF troops killed up to 70 rebels in a battle involving attack helicopters and air support in southern Uruzgan province on Saturday.
