National Conference on Tuesday demanded an inquiry into the alleged scams that had surfaced in the state during the tenure of Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.
"We demand that multiple scams and scandals must be thoroughly inquired into and culprits given exemplary punishments and measures taken to stem this rot," the NC said in an economic resolution passed during the two-day working committee meeting that began in Srinagar on Tuesday.
The corruption reached its zenith during the chief ministership of Sayeed when the state earned the dubious distinction of being declared as the second most corrupt state in the country, the party claimed.
"All the ministers and officers who had indulged in this open loot of the exchequer were allowed to go scot free which in turn gave further fillip to corruption," the resolution said.
Dissatisfied over the overall scenario in the state, the party asked the government to take urgent measures to improve the economic conditions that have left people "gasping for succour and relief".
"As if the disturbed conditions of law and order and political turmoil were not enough that people have been left to grapple with a host of problems and also to encounter an unresponsive administration," the resolution said.
Cornering the government on the issue of unemployment, the resolution said it was "apathetic" towards the issue, as about four lakh youth of the state remained unemployed.
