News channels were blocked for two to three hours on Friday, after the police issued a directive to network operators saying news updates on the ongoing terror attacks were impeding operations against the terrorists.
“The authorities personally came and asked us to stop telecast of news channels, including DD news, across Mumbai,” an official source with a cable network said.
Cellphone networks were also jammed from time to time in south Mumbai on Friday.
The directive to black out channels was probably triggered by rumours on firing at CST station spread due to unconfirmed reports on television channels.
According to a reliable source, there are around 5.5 lakh cable homes in South Mumbai and 28 lakh cable homes in the whole of Mumbai.
An order issued by DCP (Enforcement) Sheela Sail to InCable — one of the multi-system-operator in Mumbai — on Thursday read: “transmission of various clippings/live relay/coverage of the action being taken by the police against the terrorists in south Mumbai is causing impediment in the police action.”
It also stated how the transmissions by television channels were causing operational difficulties in police action against the terrorists, thereby endangering the lives of the personnel and hostages.
