The interim report, lifting the shroud of mystery surrounding Diana's death in the 1997 car crash in a Paris underpass, has apparently found no foul play and will conclude that she died in a simple car crash, a report in the Daily Mail on Monday said.

Britain's former top policeman is to state publicly for the first time that he believes Diana was killed in an accident.

The report will go to the royal coroner in the next few months and will form part of the inquest into Diana's death, the Mail said.

The former Met Commissioner Lord Stevens leading a team of 10 detectives have reportedly entered the final stages of the probe and found no evidence to contradict the French findings that Diana died in a tragic road traffic accident caused by excessive speeding.

The official French inquiry revealed Chauffeur Henri Paul was three or four times over the drink-drive limit when he left the Ritz hotel in Paris with Diana, her lover Dodi Fayed and bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones, closely followed by the French paparazzi.
