“We will ask petrol pump dealers to sell fuel only to those wearing helmet,” said SS Deswal, Gurgaon police commissioner.

The advisory will be issued within two days, he added. The police have also launched a drive against two-wheeler riders without helmet. About 14,000 challans have been issued.

“The riders should understand the importance of wearing helmets. A large number of fatalities in the district are a result of people driving without helmets,” said Deswal.

Petrol pump owners have appreciated the move. “This is a good move by the city police. However, it would be more effective if they take strict action against the violators. Even if such an advisory is given to us, it would not be easy to sell petrol only to people with helmets," said Sharad Goyal, a petrol pump owner in Gurgaon.
