Initial statements by the city police of members about terror group Indian Mujahideen (IM) participating in execution of July 11 serial train blasts in Mumbai found virtually no mention in the chargesheet filed against 21 persons on Tuesday.
Following the arrest of 20 members of IM in Ocotber last, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria had said some of the arrested persons were involved in the July 2006 serial train blasts in which over 180 persons were killed.
Some of the arrested persons like IM founder Saddik Shaikh were alleged to have pretended to be Pakistani nationals and assisted in the planting of bombs in the trains.
However, the chargesheet makes no specific mention of the involvement of the accused in the train blasts.
A letter included in the chargesheet sent by the Home Department to the police, sanctioning the application of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act against the accused, briefly mentions the involvement in the July 2006 blasts.
“Thus, this organised crime syndicate has committed the series of serious offences all over India i.e. Mumbai, Bangalore, Jaipur, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Surat and Delhi since 2005,” it stated.
