No proposal to issue dual passports to NRIs

The Govt was not considering any proposal to issue dual passports to NRIs, Rajya Sabha was informed.

The government is not considering any proposal to issue dual passports to Non-Resident Indians, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Thursday.

"There is no proposal to issue dual passports to NRIs under consideration," the Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi said in a reply in Rajya Sabha.

The Government also said a proposal on PIO {People of Indian Origin) investment in domestic aviation's air transport services was under consideration.

As per present policy, FDI is permissible in green field through automatic route whereas 74 per cent FDI is permitted in existing airports with automatic approval and 100 per cent through FIPB (Foreign Investment Promotion Board) route, the minister said.

However, the FDI in restructuring of Delhi and Mumbai airports has been capped at 49 per cent, he said.

In Air Transport Sector (Domestic Airlines) 49 per cent of FDI is permitted through automatic route with no direct or indirect participation by foreign airlines.

In another reply, the government said it was planning to tap rich experience, proven expertise and vast capital resources of the NRIs for boosting growth in infrastructure, agriculture, energy and other sectors.
