First phase is significant for all political players, as their performance in this round would provide signal for other phases.

The BSP, SP, Congress and BJP are caught in intense battle in this region. There are smaller parties like peace party to play spoilsport for major players.

In the first phase ten districts going to polls are Sitapur, Barabanki, Faizabad, Ambedkarnagar, Bahraich, Shrawasti, Balrampur, Gonda, Sidharthnagar and Basti. They are spread over in six divisions- Lucknow, Faizabad, Devipatan and Basti.

Even as senior BJP leaders Rajnath Singh, Uma Bharti hopped around in Ambedkar nagar and Barabanki respectively, the state president of Samajwadi Party Akhilesh Yadav addressed series of rallies in Faizabad, Bahraich and Sitapur and Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh was in Bahraich before the campaigning came to a halt in the evening.
In the first round 1.70 crore electors would decide the fate of 867 candidates (male 802, female 65).

This is first experiment of the commission to monitor polling progress. The commission has also directed the district administration to display important phone numbers so that electors could contact them in case of any problem.
Meanwhile the notification for 7th and final phase of polling on March 3 was also issued today. During this round 60 constituencies in western UP mainly in Roohelkhand in ten districts- Bijnor, Moradabad, Bheem Nagar, Rampur, JP Nagar (Amorha), Badaun, Barielly, Pilibhit, Shahjehanpur and Lakhimpur Khiri would go to polls. Around 1.80 crore electors would take part in this round of the polling.
