Decks for Rs 25-crore project have been cleared and the LDA has swung into action in making preparatory arrangements for an elaborate foundation stone- laying ceremony by the CM that would be followed up by cultural and musical programs. “The project would be given shape on the lines of the India International Centre in New Delhi with the help of elite members from all sections of the society,” said LDA Vice Chairman BB Singh. Some of these VVIP members would also be asked to donate funds for the project.

Spread over 3.5 acre of land adjacent to CSI Towers near Lohia Park in Gomti Nagar, the three-storied structure would comprise an auditorium, a library and a meeting cum conference hall. A New Delhi-based architect has designed the project, idea for which was mooted by NDA convener George Fernandes during the dedication ceremony of the Lohia Park here on March 23 last year.

Incidentally, this would be the fourth convention centre of its kind in the city.

Of the remaining three while Indira Gandhi Pratishthan is already under construction in Vibhuti Khand of Gomti Nagar, the other two centers are yet to host any event of national leave alone international significance. This include the Scientific Convention Centre at the KGMU mooted by former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Baba Saheb Bhim Rao Antarashtraya Samajik Parivartan Pustakalay Evam Sanghralay in Gomti Nagar conceived by BSP chief Mayawati.
