Tamil Nadu police on Sunday said only one person was likely to be involved in the murder of a former ship captain and his wife in the city last week, where the two were shot dead by a man who later died allegedly while in police custody.
Based on questions asked to the deceased couple's daughter-in-law and her children, police said it appeared that the deceased Rajan (alias) Shanmugasundaram was likely to have been the lone person involved in the crime.
It was initially believed that more than one person could have been involved in the murder of Elangovan and his wife Ramani at Panayur village.
"Investigation has revealed that Rajan was involved in some other criminal cases too. He could have been the only person involved in the murder," CB-CID ADGP Archana Ramasundaram said in a release.
Police also recovered the car Rajan had used on the day of the murder day, which was reported as lost by a person from nearby Neelankarai area in June, Ramasundaram said, adding the matter was also being probed.
