The online admissions system introduced for junior colleges in Maharashtra this year will be applicable for only 45 per cent of the seats. The rest come under religious, community, linguistic and management quotas and will be filled as per the old forms-and-queues system.
This was decided by state Education Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil and the online admissions board at an open-forum meeting on Thursday.
“The online process shall now only be for the 45 per cent comprising the general category,” confirmed SD Chitali, member of the online admissions management committee. “The government will not handle the 50 per cent minority quota and the 5 per cent management seats.”
The board urged college principals to encourage minority students to apply online as well, though this can only be in the open category. “Those applying under minority quotas offline should apply online too [in the general category]. It will be circulated in the system till their preferences are achieved,” said Madhuri Pethe, principal of NL Dahanukar College and member of the committee.
The admissions website will go live seven days before the results are declared, allowing students to familiarise themselves with it.

{{/usCountry}}Suggestions are being taken to improve the online admissions system to weed out the problems faced last year. Students from other states can fill their forms online as well, print them and mail them to the Mumbai Knowledge Corporation Ltd (MKCL), which is implementing the process.
“We are using multiple servers so that, if one collapses, another takes over automatically,” said Aatul Wadegaonkar, general manager, eGovernance Cell, MKCL.
“There will be submission centres across the state where students can get help in filling forms. These centres are mainly for those who don’t have access to computers,” said Pethe.
