Islamabad had earlier banned Pakistani Shias from travelling to Iran without proper authorisation to prevent them from going to Lebanon to join Hezbollah to fight Israel.

Reacting to Islamist alliance Muthahida Majlis Amal (MMA) leader Fazlur Rehman's comments that his alliance would mobilise a lakh 'jihadis' to fight in Lebanon, Interior Minister Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao told reporters here yesterday that Pakistan supported the Lebanese people in the current conflict but would not permit its nationals to join the war on their own.

Sherpao said the government was supporting the Lebanese government and its people at every level and was also providing all necessary aid.

"We have condemned the killing of innocent women and children, and are stressing the UN to call for a ceasefire. But no one would be allowed to go to Lebanon and take part in the war," he said.

The Pakistan government's ban on Shias from visiting Iran without proper authorisation came into affect from Tuesday.

Pakistan's Interior Ministry has reportedly issued a notification directing the Federal Investigation Agency not to allow any traveller from Pakistan into Iran from Tuesday unless he or she has a no objection certificate from the ministry.
