In what is seen as a crucial meeting for government formation in the state, BJP general secretary Ram Madhav reached Srinagar on Wednesday evening to meet PDP president Mehbooba Mufti at her residence.
Madhav left for New Delhi after the one-on-one meeting between the leaders that lasted for more than an hour.
The BJP general secretary is believed to have visited Srinagar to start formal deliberations with the PDP and iron out differences between the two parties. The leaders were tightlipped about the outcome of the meeting.
Earlier in the day, the PDP called the crisis in JNU a “debate about the idea of India”. Speaking on the issue for the first time, the party’s chief spokesman, Naeem Akhtar, said the JNU crisis was a national-level debate. “It’s a national-level issue and not about Kashmir at all. It’s a debate about the idea of India,” Akhtar said.
When questioned if the crisis in the university or the arrest of Delhi University professor SAR Geelani could affect government formation, Akhtar said the party’s cards were out in the open. “Our cards are open. We want implementation of the agenda of alliance,” he said.
Another PDP leader, Nazir Ahmad Laway, said the JNU incident was “unfortunate and posed a security risk for Kashmiri students”, adding the PDP would not tolerate the arrest and harassment of Kashmiri students by the authorities using the JNU incident as an alibi.
