Uttar Pradesh Petroleum Traders Association (UPPTA) will go on an indefinite strike from December 26 demanding reduction in state taxes on diesel and petrol.
"We demand that the tax on diesel and petrol should be reduced to 11 per cent and 20 per cent respectively as the sales of pumps in the state is going down... Especially that of diesel," UPPTA President BN Shukla told reporters in Lucknow.
He claimed that owing to low taxes in neighbouring states, UP had witnessed decline in sale of diesel, which was used by transporters and farming community.
"We have decided to organise an indefinite closure in the interest of the public, he said, adding that rate of petrol and diesel had increased from Rs 12.78 and Rs 5.46 in 1990 to Rs 48.53 and Rs 34.75, respectively, now.
