A day after suspended Chandigarh policeman Basant Singh 'Bunty' was arrested, the Sonepat police on Monday recovered a self-loading rifle (SLR) by which he murdered his paramour Sarita's husband and mother-in-law of Deepalpur village.
Besides, the police have recovered 17 rounds of bullets and a Swift DZire car (CH-AP-2303) by which they reached Haridwar in Uttar Pradesh.
Basant had, on April 18, killed Sarita's husband Sandeep Kumar and mother-in-law Roshini. He had made good his escape after the murders.
Sonepat deputy superintendent of police (headquarters) Ajeet Singh said Basant had confessed to his involvement in the double murder of Deepalpur residents. Basant was produced in Sonepat court and sent to judicial custody after a day's police remand, said Singh, who arrested Basant.
Responding to a query, the DSP said: "To evade arrest, Basant and Sarita had left for Haridwar with the weapon and parked the car, used in crime, there."
Basant had fixed the SLR, along with ammunition, on the bottom of the car's rear seat using adhesive tape and cord.
Police said that from Haridwar, they left for Rishikesh. From there, they were visited Mussourie, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Shimla and Chandigarh to "enjoy".
A driver, Ravi Kumar, a resident of Manimajra who had been with Basant earlier, has been arrested. The police would soon file a chargesheet in the Deepalpur double murder case.

The police have booked Basant under Sections 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), abduction case and relevant sections of the Arms Act, while Sarita has been booked under Sections 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC.
