The police custody of Pravin Mahajan -- accused of shooting and grievously injuring his brother and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Pramod Mahajan -- was on Saturday extended till May 3 for further investigations.
Pravin, who shot at Pramod Mahajan from close range, was produced in a court in Mumbai amid heavy security. The court had earlier sent him to police custody till Saturday.
Urging the court to extend the remand, the prosecution argued that many aspects of the shooting, which shocked the country, were yet to be probed.
The prosecution claimed that Pravin, a builder in the neighbouring Thane district, had made up his mind to kill his brother quite sometime back.
In his statement to the police, Pravin, 46, has said he was not treated well by his "high-profile" brother. The accused said he was often humiliated by Pramod Mahajan.
Pravin's lawyer maintains his client was suffering from some mental disorder for some months and that relations between the two brothers had been cordial.
