Some results were too close to call and a few were easy, but two stood out after vote count in Maharashtra and Haryana on Sunday.
Pritam Munde, the second daughter of late BJP leader Gopinath Munde, scripted Lok Sabha history in winning the Beed seat in Maharashtra in a by-election by a record margin of nearly 700,000 votes.
The slimmest margin came from Haryana. Jai Tirath Dahiya, the Congress’ sitting MLA from Rai assembly segment in Sonepat district, won by three votes. Inderjeet Dahiya of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) came in second.
First, the high. The record for a maximum victory margin in Lok Sabha polls was held by Anil Basu of the CPI-M. He had won by 592,502 votes from Arambagh in West Bengal in the 2004.
Pritam, 32, polled 922,416 votes while trouncing former Congress minister Ashok Patil by 6,96,321 votes, poll officials said.
The Beed bypoll was necessitated following the death of Gopinath Munde in a road accident in Delhi in June this year.
In Haryana, 62-year-old Jai Tirath polled 36,703 votes as against his 68-year-old INLD rival Inderjeet Dahiya’s 36,700, as per the result declared by the election department.
Jai Tirath’s margin is, however, not the slimmest in Indian elections. There have been a few one-vote margin wins including Congress leader CP Joshi’s controversial loss to BJP’s Kalyan Singh Chouhan from Rajasthan’s Nathdwara assembly segment in 2008.
