The first day of the New Year saw several appointments in the Indian Army and Air Force as at least four top-notch officers retired on the last day of 2007.
Air Marshal PV Naik took over as the Vice Chief of the Air Staff at Air Headquarters in New Delhi after Air Marshal B.N. Gokhale retired.
In his 38 years in the IAF, he has flown all MiG-21 variants and MiG-23-BNs, an official spokesperson for the IAF said.
He was the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Central Air Command prior to taking over as the Vice Chief.
Air Marshal P.K. Barbora, another fighter pilot, took over on Tuesday as the new Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Air Command.
Barbora was serving as the Air Officer Commanding-in- Chief of the Eastern Air Command since April 2007. He replaced Air Marshal P.S. Ahluwalia.
The Army saw Lt Gen. A.K.S. Chandele take over as the Director General of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers.
He is an expert in radar, anti-tank gun/missile equipment. Also, Lt Gen. Bharat Singh Sisodia, has taken over as the Director General, Ordnance Services, at the Army headquarters on Monday.
