A strong 6.0-magnitude earthquake shook in the Indian Ocean on Sunday near a tiny, remote French island, according to the US Geological Survey.

The earthquake's epicentre was 173 kilometres northeast of Amsterdam Island, a French territory between Africa and Australia, and 2,769 kilometres southeast Mauritius when it hit at 1417 GMT, the USGS said.

The quake was about 10 kilometres under the seabed.
