The move came after the Rs 20-crore new trains that were brought in to boost the city’s suburban network started adding to several complications, affecting the daily running of services. The WR has also officially blamed the bad quality of new-age trains for not being able to introduce new services as promised in the railway budget.

But their deployment led to shortage of staff in the car shed and the fitters too protested against the move so the administration has now decided to ask motormen to look after the problems after their working hours.

But the motormen too plan to protest against it.

WR General Manager Ravindra Nath Verma said, “The technical problems with new trains are leading to problems in introducing the 200 new services that were promised.”

HT was the first to report that the new trains had problems. The railways claim to have made a world record by manufacturing four to five 12-car trains in one month that is about 60 coaches a month. But in doing so they seem to have been assembled and dispatched in a tearing hurry, compromising quality and safety of commuters.
