Jammu and Kashmir police sub-inspector Mohammad Afzal Wani, the main accused in the Gool firing near Ramban, was arrested on Monday evening.
A case had been registered under Section 302 of the RPC against him. He was in police custody.Earlier in the day, the district administration had assured the firing victims of the arrest. The assurance was given in the presence of cabinet minister Ali Mohammad Sagar, Choudhary Ramzan and director general of police Ashok Parsad, who visited Gool.
Families of the victims had on Sunday evening met the deputy commissioner and Ramban SSP, seeking Wani's arrest. Relatives of police officials and some of Wani's sympathizers objected to this and sought an impartial inquiry. There was an altercation between the two groups and the group of Wani's sympathizers reportedly walked out of the meeting.
The officials assured both groups that no innocent would be prosecuted and no accused would be spared.
The police have registered four FIRs in the incident. Lecturer Manzoor Shan had died in the firing by the sub-inspector. The accused had family relations with the victim and they were classmates too.
On the last day of the three-day bandh, all shops remained closed in Gool and Sangaldham.
Life returned to normal in other towns of Ramban district and traffic moved smoothly on the national highway.
