Fifteen soldiers died when leftist rebels attacked their unit in northeastern Colombia, near the border with Venezuela.

Army commander General Carlos Ospina said the attack occurred on Monday as the unit moved between the towns of Tibu and La Gabarra in the province of Norte de Santander, responding t reports that rebels from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) were concentrating there.
"It's deplorable, but the soldiers who were trying to establish security in the region walked into a mine field," Ospina said.
