A record number of more than 90,000 nominations have been filed this time for the three-tier panchayat elections in state.

A record number of more than 90,000 nominations have been filed this time for the three-tier panchayat elections in state.

Over 90,471 nominations had been received for the posts of president, vice presidents of panchayats and ward members.

The elections of president and vice president of gram panchayats would be held through direct vote for the first time while zila parishad and panchayat samiti members would also be elected simultaneously.

About eighty three thousand nominations were filed in the last panchayat elections held in 2005 but there were no separate nominations for the post of Vice presidents.

The number of candidates for the post of panchayat presidents had gone down and as against 20,512 nominations filed for 3195 panchayats last time, the number of candidates was 16,714 this time.

A decrease in number of candidates was also discernible in case of panchayat ward members, 44,344 nominations have been filed for 19,159 posts this time as compared to 53,591 nominations in last elections.

As many as 20,903 people have filed nominations for the post of panchayat up pradhan (Vice President) who were elected through indirect vote last time.

As many as 46.11 lakh voters would caste their votes for 3195 gram panchayats, 75 out Block Samitis and eleven Zila Parishads.
