Members of the Palam Vihar Vyapar Kendra launched a signature campaign to protest against a liquor vend coming up near a playschool and temple premises.
The Palam Vihar Residents’ Association (PVRA), temple authority and the market association also plan to send a letter to the excise department to stall the opening of the shop.
Nearly 200 shopowners have signed the letter opposing the liquor vends in the market, which is 100 metres away from the school and temple.
The traders contend that the vend will have a negative effect for students of Mothers’ Pride playschool, Red Cross Society School, temple and market visitors, especially women. It will also make the area unsafe.
“We will have drunk goons loitering around in the market, making it unsafe for women and children of the colony. A draft letter to be sent to the excise department has also been drafted. We oppose the liquor vend in our market,” said Pavan Malhotra, general secretary, Palam Vyapar Kendra Welfare Association.
The excise department has allotted 259 liquor vends for the 2011-12 financial year, which has fetched a revenue of more than R286.83 crore.
