News of any beer bar opening in town is good news. The last beer guzzling joint, Quench in Bandra, went on to become a huge hit, recently celebrating its one year anniversary.
But Cerveza might not be the place you want to visit to get that occasional mid-week drink. Primarily maybe because it’s located inside a restaurant in the middle of Kala Ghoda. And secondly, it might not be the easiest on your pocket. But if you’re okay spending an average of Rs 1,000 for two pints, then it has a lot to offer. Though, we suggest you eat well before you start drinking. We tried draining the oil-laden onion rings to see if we could salvage some, but we couldn’t. The fish fingers with tartar sauce just tasted outright bad.
The Cheese Nachos were no different from a Rs 10 pack of Pepito chips thrown into the microwave with a cheese slice. The biggest disappointment was the food, even though we hold no grudge for the lack of options.
The range of beers from all over the world on a well-designed menu with a tidbit on the lagers’ history, the amount of calories and the food that it goes best with, is indeed impressive. Warning: You may spend the first 15 minutes counting the amount of calories you’ve consumed chugging pitchers over the years, but there are a lot many distractions at bay with fancy bottles wooing you.
The beers are divided into about eight categories — lager, ale, wheat/white beer, stout, dry beer, fruit beer, farmhouse and draught beer. Indian beers were priced around Rs 250, whilethe popular international ale Leffe came at Rs 420, and a good 200 calories. The Brooklyn IPA, which was described as “perhaps the first beer made for India by the British” was for Rs 400. If you enjoy light beer, the Chinese product Tsingtao (Rs 420) is by far the best, and on the other extreme is Irish Murphy’s dark beer (Rs 550). But if you’re not a beer drinker and your friends have dragged you here, go for the beer cocktail Snake Bite (R 550), served in a slim glass consisting of a mix of tequila, vodka, rum, gin and topped with fresh draught beer.
But ale in ale, Cerveza is confused and needs to fix their kitchen, as everything else they serve is not their responsibility. Even the DJ couldn’t make up his mind on what mood to maintain, shuffling between ‘Chammak Challo...’ to ‘Summer of 69...’ thereby just killing whatever little high we had managed to get after spending a few thousand bucks.
