A sum of Rs 95 lakh cash was stolen from the Chembur flat of a former aide of senior Congress leader Narayan Rane on Monday night.
The police suspect that the theft was committed by a domestic help employed by Ravi Kamath (45).
Kamath owns a two bedroom flat on the first floor of Sai Siddhi building at 11th Road in Chembur. The domestic help, Sachin Birahi (40), had been employed at Kamath’s house for nine years. The police said Kamath found out about the burglary on Tuesday.
He lodged a first information report at the Chembur police station. “When Kamath woke up on Tuesday, he found the cupboard in his bedroom ransacked and cash Rs 95 lakh missing from the locker,” said police inspector Dilip Raut of Chembur police station.
“He searched the house and realised that his Sachin Birahi was missing.”
Raut added that they would verify whether the domestic help had been registered with the police station. Kamath told the police that he mostly stays in Pune with his family and visits the Chembur house occasionally. Birahi used to take care of the house.
“The stolen cash belonged to one of my relatives who had given it to me for safekeeping,” Kamath told the police.
Kamath and his family members would stay in the house whenever they came to Mumbai.

“Our teams have been searching for Sachin at all exit points, including railway stations, bus stops and public places. We hope to arrest him soon,” said Raut.
