The Supreme Court on Saturday gave its permission to the Sunni Central Board of Waqfs to carry out work required to replace old tarpaulin and ropes at the makeshift temple at the disputed Ram Janmbhoomi-Babri Masjid site in Ayodhya.

A bench compromising of Justice SS Nijjar and A K Sikri granted permission after the Centre and other parties to the dispute didn’t raise any objections.

The apex court had admitted several petitions challenging the Allahabad High Court verdict, which called for a three-way division of Ayodhya’s disputed site on September 30, 2010.

On May 9, 2011, the apex court had stayed the high court verdict saying none of the parties had demanded partition of the land.

The SC ordered all parties to maintain the status quo at the site, which means that prayers at the make-shift temple would go on as per usual.

The court, however, restrained any kind of religious activity on the adjacent 67 acre land, which was taken over by the Centre.
