The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has taken objection to the use of the name of Maratha warrior-king Shivaji by the Shiv Sena for its branded vada pav, Shiv Vada Pav.
On Monday, a NCP delegation led by the party’s city unit chief, Sachin Ahir, met Municipal Commissioner Jairaj Phatak and demanded that he withdraw the permission given to set up 125 Shiv Vada stalls.
Ahir claimed that the scheme was an insult to the Maratha warrior.
Using the name of Shivaji for branding the vada pav is hurting the sentiments of the Marathi manoos,” he said. “So the civic body should not launch the scheme and even the state government should not approve it.”
This (the Shiv Sena-backed vada pav) was a “political gimmick” in the face of elections, he said.
He also alleged that the BMC’s action was against the hawking policy under consideration of the Supreme Court.
Shiv Sena leader Ravindra Waikar accused the NCP of politicising the issue.
“Snacks like shankarpali and fruits like seetaphal and ramphal are named after Hindu deitys, so what’s wrong with the Shiv Vada Pav?” Waikar said.
