In a storeroom in the bowels of this 23-storey nuclear-powered supercarrier, John Saccomando and his rock band have been trying to hit the perfect beat. Oblivious to the controversy USS Nimitz has triggered in India, he and his band members, who call themselves Unnecessary Bacon, are focused on their forthcoming gig in Chennai.
When Lieutenant Commander Saccomando is not on the drums, you will find him strapped inside the cockpit of an F-18 Super Hornet belonging to the Black Aces squadron. But the 34-year-old naval aviator is a tad nervous these days, about how the rock show will go in Chennai on July 3.
“We are really excited about this performance and have shortlisted the tracks we are going to play. I hope the crowd finds the music familiar and likes us,” says Saccomando. The band will play cover versions of Aerosmith, Twisted Sister and AC/DC.
The profile of the band members is diverse. The lead guitarist of the six-member band was a music teacher before joining the navy. The lead singer is a gunner.
Saccomando says this is his third deployment in the Western Pacific Ocean but he has never had the opportunity to hit Indian shores. For him, Chennai will be all about shopping, experimenting with new cuisine and, of course, music.
