The Uttar Pradesh Samajwadi Party today demanded registration of an FIR against Chief Minister Mayawati for publicly accepting garlands of currency notes.
The party leaders also threatened to launch a statewide agitation "if the Centre fails to take legal action on the issue."
The 'garland drama' makes a mockery of the RBI's mandatory guidelines on the country's currency, Khwaja Hallem, member of the Party's National Executive and Mujahid Kidwai, SP's state secretary told reporters in Aligarh on Thursday.
The SP leaders would soon meet the Governor seeking action against Mayawati for "public display of a corrupt pratice", they said.
They alleged that Congress was adopting a soft approach towards Mayawati because the UPA government needs the support of the BSP for the passage of the Women's Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha.
