Stray dogs kill eight month old baby in Kashmir

An eight-month old baby died at a hospital in Kashmir capital Srinagar, three weeks after she was mauled by stray dogs. Baby Shafia Ahad was sleeping at her home in Shanpora locality of Habak in Srinagar when dogs jumped in through a window and attacked her.

Baby Shafia Ahad was sleeping at her home in Shanpora locality of Habak in Srinagar when dogs jumped in through a window and attacked her.

Her mother told a local news agency that the dogs bit her daughter several times. This happened when the mother was out to fill water from the nearby nallah.

The deadly stray packs started barking at each other attracting attention of the locals who were shocked to see the baby lying in a pool of blood.

According to a witness "The baby was crying but its cries were dominated by the barking dogs."
The baby was shifted to GB Panth Hospital where she received 47 stitches on the face. She died on Monday afternoon.

Doctors, who treated her, said the baby had received the deadly 'Category III' bites, and died because of rabies infection.

Family of the girl and residents of Habak have accused the ruling National Conference party and Srinagar Municipal Corporation of being "more concerned towards the welfare of dogs than humans."
