He was delivering a lecture on ‘Rehabilitative Technology for the Hearing Impaired’ on the second day of the three-day national seminar and workshop on ‘Early Identification, Intervention and Curricular Needs of Children with Special Needs’ at the Education Faculty of Banaras Hindu University in Kamachcha on Monday.
Dr. Banik said it was known that any one disability could have additional disabilities, which created heavy burden for the rehabilitation team worker.
“A stitch in time saves nine”, he said, adding, “If care is exercised during pre-natal, post-natal and early childhood years, then around 70 percent of disabilities are preventable”.
“Despite care taken, an impairment may still occur. Early detection and subsequent treatment will arrest the deterioration of impairments and prevent secondary disabilities. Early intervention becomes important for the child to take opportunities to learn more complex tasks”, he said.
