Public transport was crippled in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday as state-run buses went off the road in response to a 24-hour strike call given by the UP Roadways Employees' Union to press for higher wages.
The "chakka jam" from midnight to midnight had evoked a "very good response" throughout the state and thousands of roadways buses had joined in the strike, employees union president Ramji Tripathi claimed in Lucknow.
Lakhs of commuters in the state faced hardships and bus stands at Kaiserbagh and Charbagh in Lucknow wore a deserted look with people seen wandering around in search of alternative means of transport.
Reports from Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Bareilly, Ghaziabad, Meerut, Moradabad, Kanpur and Agra said the roadways buses were not plying in response to the strike call.
