Coming down heavily on the Uttar Pradesh Higher Secondary Education Board over wrong entry in a student's marksheet in his high school examinations, the Allahabad High Court has directed it to rectify the mistake and provide him compensation of Rs 20,000.
Dal Bahadur Singh scored 73 marks in Hindi but his marksheet showing his score as a dismal 13.
The order was passed by Justice V K Shukla on October 13 on a writ petition of Singh, who had moved the court with the contention that he had appeared in the examinations this year despite being confident that he had done well in his Hindi paper, the marksheet showed him having scored only 13 marks.
The court, thereafter, asked the Board to review the case and it was submitted that Singh had secured 73 marks and, apparently, because of an oversight his marksheet stated his score to be 13.
"Once such is the factual situation, the same shows gross negligence on part of the Board," the court remarked with displeasure.
Noting that the petitioner has been "forced to undergo a lot of stress and mental agony", the court directed the Board to "issue fresh, revised marks sheet in favour of the petitioner preferably within four weeks" and ordered that "an account payee cheque of Rs 20,000 in the name of the father of the petitioner within the aforesaid period be also given to the petitioner by way of compensation".
