Renowned Kashmiri folk and Sufi singer Ghulam Ahmad Sofi passed away here on Thursday.

He was 68.
Popularly known as Amam Sofi, the singer had the distinction of performing at national and international functions, including one attended by first Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru.

During a recent interview broadcast on Radio Kashmir, Sofi had said he was illiterate and had memorised nearly all of his over 1,000 songs and those sung by his peers and teachers.
Several prominent personalities, including Governor Lt Gen (retd) S K Sinha, Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and his cabinet colleagues have expressed grief and sorrow over the demise of the great singer.
