A ‘swadeshi’ phenomenon is apparent among students graduating from the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad (IIM-A) where the annual placement process concluded with as many as 18 shunning overseas job offers.

Of the 90 overseas jobs offered, only 72 were accepted while 163 of the 420 domestic jobs were accepted by the IIM-A students this year. Last year, 16 students had refused job offers from foreign firms.

The week-long placement process came to an end a day earlier than scheduled as all the 235 available students were successfully placed by late evening on Sunday. Of the 241 students passing out , six had already opted out to start their own enterprises.

With a total of 510 jobs on offer for just 235 students, the graduates had multiple choices as nearly 30 new recruiters visited the campus this year. Apart from the overseas salary offered touching a new high of $1,85,000 per annum this year, the highest domestic salary too has risen to Rs 34 lakh.

The average overseas salary bagged by students this year is $92,000, a 16 per cent rise over last year.
