Bishnu Maheshwori, a 29-year-old Indian working for one of Nepal's biggest business houses, was being questioned by the police station on Sunday morning when he ran out of the room on the second floor and jumped down, the Himalayan Times daily reported Monday.

Maheshwori was taken to hospital where he was declared dead.

After a complaint by the Chaudhary Group, Maheshwori was arrested and taken to the Hanumandhoka police station in the capital, at the heart of the city's commercial area.

The daily said he had been severely beaten up by policemen during the questioning.

The daily also quoted the dead man's lawyer as saying Maheshwori had been detained illegally. However, it was not mentioned when he had been arrested.

Bishnu Luitel, the Indian's lawyer, alleged his client had been kept in detention without being charged or produced in court. Luitel had filed an application in the Supreme Court asking for his release.

In answer to his petition, the court had asked the police authorities to produce Maheshwori in court within three days.
