Terrorists threaten Hurriyat's Mirwaiz Farooq

Terrorists have threatened that he and members of his delegation would be sorted out on return from Pakistan.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the visiting Chairman of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), has been receiving threatening messages from militant Kashmiri groups since he appealed to them to give up their armed struggle and go for negotiations to resolve the Kashmir issue.

Militants have threatened that he and members of his delegation would be "sorted out" on return from Pakistan, the Dawn newspaper said on Thursday.

The threats have ensued from Jammu and Kashmir, the paper alleged.

There was a grenade attack on Mirwaiz Farooq's residence in Srinagar just ahead of his visit to Pakistan last week. He said at the time that people opposed to a peaceful resolution of the Kashmir problem were behind the attack and declared that he would not be dissuaded from undertaking the visit.

The Mirwaiz's statement on the armed struggle has evoked scathing criticism from some Kashmiri militant groups who have accused him of taking a U-turn. While hosting him, the Pakistani government has so far steered clear of commenting on his statements.

Mirwaiz, who is currently visiting Pakistan along with senior Kashmiri leaders, Abdul Ghani Bhat and Bilal Lone, has privately expressed concern about the threats.
