The government has enough time to finesse the Lokpal Bill
In his article At the rainbow’s end (Incidentally, December 31), Gopalkrishna Gandhi makes a valid point that the collapse of the Lokpal Bill in the Rajya Sabha is not an irreversible defeat. The government has enough time till the next Parliament session, when the Bill will be taken up for discussion again, to fix the shortcomings in it. The passage of the Bill should not be seen as a victory or defeat for any particular party. Parliamentarians should treat this as an opportunity to serve the nation.

Victimising the victim further
Samar Halarnkar in Kept in her place (Maha Bharat, January 5) rightly rebukes the Andhra Pradesh top cop who recently made disparaging remarks about women. Rather than performing his duty of keeping the crime rate low, the director general of police of the state is accusing women of dressing inappropriately. This is, he believes, the chief reason for the high rate of rape incidents in Andhra Pradesh. But can he use the same excuse to justify the rape of minors and toddlers? Like the writer, I too wonder what’s stopping the state authorities from taking any action against the DGP.

Justifying a rapist’s action is as mindless as patting a thief on the back for stealing from the rich. Men, especially those entrusted to ensure women’s security, should not shoot their mouths off.
