Three cops were later suspended for their alleged involvement in the excess.
The ruckus began when angry family members of the deceased and other villagers blocked the Agra-Lucknow national highway and tried to damage vehicles. The police resorted to baton-charge and assaulted the protesters in a bid to disperse them.
Superintendent of police, Faizabad, Rakesh Kumar on Tuesday ordered an enquiry into the incident by circle officer (city) Rajesh Chaudhary. He suspended three cops after initial investigation into the case. They were identified as constables Sanjeev Kumar, Neeraj Singh and Girraj Kumar. “The three were prima facie found guilty in the incident,” the SP said on Tuesday evening.
“Prima facie the use of force against women by police appears to be excessive... The situation went out of control as women were lying on the highway, causing long queues of vehicle,” the SP added.
The SP said the police used force as the mob had blocked a busy crossing. “There was another accident on the highway. Chaos prevailed and it left little option for the police to try clearing the traffic late in the night,” he said.
