CONSUMPTION OF tobacco products claimed one life every 10 seconds, said Indian Medical Association president Dr SK Gupta here on Wednesday.
He was speaking at a seminar on ‘The role medical specialists play to cure diseases caused by tobacco products’. The seminar was held to mark World No Tobacco Day.
IMA secretary Dr UC Sinha said cigarettes, bidis, gutkha and pan masala were burnt to make people aware of the harm done by tobacco products.Chief guest and GSVM Medical College principal Dr SK Katiyar launched a CD developed by Dr Madhukar Katiyar regarding the effects of tobacco products.
He said tobacco was the main cause of lung cancer. Smoking led to heart attack, high blood pressure and brain strokes, he said.
Former MP and social worker Subhashini Ali said a ban must be imposed on tobacco products. She even stressed upon creating awareness among people regarding tobacco products.
The programme was conducted by Dr UC Sinha and the vote of thanks was proposed by Dr RP Singh.
Several prominent doctors of the city, including Dr SK Nigam, Dr NS Dixit, Dr VC Rastogi, Dr RN Chaurasia, Dr Hameed, Dr Gulab Agarwal and Dr Rakesh Jain, were present.

ON THE World No Tobacco Day, a meeting was organised by the members of Dr BR Ambedkar Samaj Seva Samiti UP in Mariampur hospital here on Wednesday.
About 500 people pledged to quit tobacco in the meeting. They also pledged to intensify the anti-drug campaign.State president of the organisation Om Prakash Gautam demanded that the government prohibit smoking in public places.
The dangers of tobacco consumption were also discussed in the meeting, which was conducted by city president of the Samiti Ram Bahadur Pal and presided over by Om Prakash Gautam.
