Tragedy averted as IED detected on J&K highway

The device was planted by terrorists, on Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, a police spokesman said.

A major tragedy was averted on Thursday with the timely detection of a three-kg improvised explosive device.

The device was planted by terrorists, on Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, a police spokesman said.

The IED, kept inside an under-construction shop at Samboora village of Pampore, 20 kms from Srinagar, was noticed by a police patrol party and was later defused by the experts of bomb disposal squad, the spokesman said.

He said timely detection of the IED foiled ultras' plan to set off an explosion in the highway town.

In another incident, the sources said, terrorists opened fire on a Power Development Department officer at Kanlibagh in Baramulla district of north Kashmir this afternoon.

However, the officer, Bashir Ahmad Malla, a resident of Khanpora, escaped unhurt, the spokesman said adding, the reason behind the attack was not known immediately.
