On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the formation of the United Nations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote to all 193 heads of member states on July 4 outlining his vision of the great institution’s role in a rapidly changing world.
The Prime Minister’s focus was on how the multilateral system can be made more inclusive, effective and better suited to the purpose for which it was conceived.
His call to challenge the existing thinking on the three fundamental pillars of the UN — peace, security, human rights and development — have created a positive impact on the leaders he met on his five-nation tour of Central Asia.
Modi’s focus on inclusion and on the need for zero tolerance of terror and its ideology has found resonance across world capitals, many of whose leaders he has engaged with in his energetic and proactive diplomatic outreach since assuming office last year.

Terrorism and violent, intolerant extremism did not exist earlier as a primary threat to nations and societies at large. Indeed, with expanded geographical spread, vast resources and new instruments to spread its ideology and draw recruits, the menace of terrorism and extremism has acquired a new dimension that requires a comprehensive global strategy. We must use this historic year to jointly send an unambiguous message of zero tolerance against terrorism, the Prime Minister said in the letter.
Eliminating poverty by 2030 should unquestionably be at the heart of the post-2015 Development Agenda, he further said in the letter.
We must not miss this opportunity, he said in the letter, to honour the UN’s covenant with the poor of the world, with its youth, with nature and with the voiceless unborn.
